Privacy

The short version

Pages & Patterns is private by default. We use the information you provide to maintain your account, reading history, library, goals, analytics, and optional challenge planning. We do not sell your personal reading data.

Information we collect

Depending on how you use the service, we may process:

• Your email address and authentication records.
• Books, ratings, reviews, reading dates, sessions, goals, tags, and other details you choose to save.
• CSV files and original source values used during a library import.
• Challenge follows, planned books, reminders, and book-club calendar entries.
• Limited technical logs needed to secure, diagnose, and improve the service.
• Milestone events such as creating an account or adding a first book, without your email address.
• When you open a retailer offer, the offer, shelf context, account, and time. We do not store your IP address, browser fingerprint, retailer purchase, or retailer browsing history with that event.

How the information is used

We use this information to provide the features you request, calculate your private analytics, reconcile imports, prevent abuse, diagnose failures, and understand whether the product is useful. Book searches may be sent to configured metadata providers so the requested title, author, edition, and cover can be found.

Our legal bases

Where European or United Kingdom data-protection law applies, we generally process account, library, import, analytics, goals, and challenge data because it is necessary to provide the service you request. We rely on legitimate interests for proportionate security, reliability, abuse prevention, and limited product measurement. We will ask for consent before optional marketing or non-essential tracking that requires it. You can withdraw consent without affecting earlier lawful processing.

Service providers and international transfers

Pages & Patterns currently relies on service providers for hosting, database and authentication, transactional email, product metadata, and basic site measurement. These providers receive only the information needed to perform their role. Some providers process information in the United States or other countries outside your home country. Before a public European launch, Pages & Patterns will maintain appropriate processor agreements and transfer safeguards, such as adequacy decisions, Standard Contractual Clauses, or the applicable United Kingdom transfer terms.

Retention and control

Imported CSV files are retained only for the documented import and recovery period and are then eligible for automatic deletion. You can download a copy of your account data or permanently delete your account from the Account page. Shared catalog facts may remain after deletion without a connection to your account. Security and operational records are retained only for documented periods proportionate to their purpose.

Cookies and measurement

Authentication uses cookies that are necessary to keep you signed in. Device-only preferences may use local browser storage. Public page measurement uses aggregated Vercel Web Analytics. With your separate permission, Google Analytics may also count privacy-safe visits to the home page, public challenge pages, public author pages, and legal pages. Google Analytics is not loaded on your library, reading analytics, account, imports, searches, or other private pages. We mask public record identifiers and do not send book titles, search terms, email addresses, account identifiers, or private reading data to Google.

Google Analytics is off until you allow it on a device. Advertising storage, Google signals, and ad personalization remain disabled. You can change your choice below at any time. Turning it off stops future Google Analytics measurement and removes the Google Analytics cookies available to this site on that device. Pages & Patterns does not currently use advertising cookies. Signed-in readers can separately disable first-party product milestone measurement from the Account page.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, object to, or receive a portable copy of your personal information, and to complain to your local data-protection authority. The Account page provides self-service exports, corrections, deletion, and a request form for anything else. Requests may require reasonable identity verification, and legal exceptions may apply.

Security, children, and changes

We use access controls and private storage intended to keep one reader from accessing another reader's information. No online service can promise absolute security. Pages & Patterns is not currently designed for children, and an age policy will be published before public registration is promoted in countries with child-specific digital-service rules. Material changes to this notice will be reflected by the updated date above.

Contact

Signed-in readers can submit a privacy request from the Account page. If you cannot access your account, use the contact channel through which you received access during the private beta. A dedicated privacy address and the legal identity of the service operator will be published before public launch. Please never include passwords, API keys, or other account credentials.
